Joshua 1:8

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall read (and meditate on) it day and night, so that you may be careful to do (everything) in accordance with all that is written in it; for then you will make you way prosperous, and then you will be successful.  

God doesn’t tell us to read the word to be a drudgery. He is telling us this because our thoughts can get slammed with earthly, worldly, fleshly desires that draw us away from Him. What has our focus has our thoughts, our minds and attention. If we wonder why our life is where it is we are to examine our thoughts compared to the Word.
