1 Corinthians 15:56-57

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin (by which it brings death) is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Death is the consequence of sin by the separation from God, a spiritual death and a physical death of the bodies. Jesus defeated death on the cross, redeeming us from our sins. We cannot take for granted the gift of salvation given to us through Jesus. Our eternities would be spent in torment in hell without the redemption on the cross.
