Romans 1:16,17

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.  For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, the just shall live by faith.  

The world would make the believer ashamed of the gospel and try to turn the believer away from the truth. The world has not yet opened their eyes to the truth and revelation of the word of God.  As a believer, we are not ashamed of the truth nor the light of the gospel.  The gospel brought us our salvation when we believed, and by faith in God, we grow stronger each day in the light of the word.
